The Cathares Castles

Peyrepertuse Castle

The quality of its construction and the large amount that is still intact make this castle the most remarkable example of medieval military architecture from the Languedoc.

If you are in the area this summer, check out the 10th annual Grande Fête Médiévale at the castle.

Queribus Castle

Three kilometers from the village of Cucugnan, made famous by Alphonse Daudet in Le Curé de Cucugnan, Queribus Castle is perched at an elevation of 728 m and provides a gorgeous view of the plains of the Roussillon and the Corbières.

The castle is an impressive site on its rocky outcrop, inviting you to imagine bygone times. The renovation began in 1951, but the fortress was completely transformed between 1998 and 2002.

Villerouge-Termenès Castle

At the heart of a medieval village, the imposing castle commands respect…

It was owned by the archbishops of Narbonne from 1110 to 1789. The castle has been completely restored, and is a remarkable example of medieval military architecture.

Termes Castle

Take in the breathtaking view of the Hautes-Corbières from Termes Castle…

We have learned more and more about the history of this castle through archaeological excavations and promotional work.

Aguilar Castle in Tuchan

The ruins of the Aguilar castle sit perched atop a rocky outcrop…

This is a strategic location, overlooking the Tuchan plain and the entrance to the Corbières.

It was permanently abandoned in 1569, after several attacks by the Spanish in the 14th century.

In 1999 it was the setting for the TV series “Tramontane”.
