Tourism in Castelnaudary

Just 100km from the La Palme campsite, Castelnaudary is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Aude. It still lives to the rhythm of the Canal du Midi built in the 17th century. Between the old port and the locks, the aptly named Grand Bassin covers 7 hectares. Bordered by large trees, it has become a much sought-after place for walking. The inland waterway industry has left its mark on the town and among the remarkable structures still in place since the 1680s, the quadruple lock of Saint-Roch, which crosses an impressive 10m difference in level, is worth seeing. A little further on, the Fontserrannes lock, the longest in France with its eight locks. A flour mill and several mills, one of which is still visible, were built on the banks to benefit from the water flow. Take advantage of your stay to discover the local specialities in a market of the Aude.

The Saint-Papoul abbey is a listed historic monument, with a Gothic church and Romanesque cloister. A few steps away, the medieval village of the same name will delight you with its half-timbered houses and its watchtower which have resisted the assaults of time. Finally, don't miss the "cassoulet route" proposed by Castelnaudary around producers, breeders and craftsmen in the respect of traditions. And if you are there on the last weekend of August, enjoy the Cassoulet Festival.
