Tourism in Sigean

Long located on a strategic border zone between the Kingdom of France and the Kingdom of Aragon, Sigean has known turbulent centuries. Its territory preserves the vestiges of successive human occupations, from the ancient oppidum of Pech-Maho to the old medieval town surrounded by ramparts. The Corbières archaeological museum, housed in an old 18th century residence, evokes the excavations of the oppidum but also the ancient regional trades and the city's past as a border town. The narrow streets of the old town invite you to stroll and host numerous festivities.

Situated in the heart of the Narbonnaise en Méditerranée nature park, the territory of Sigean is criss-crossed by hiking trails that allow you to discover the natural riches of the Corbières maritimes, and particularly the astonishing lagoon landscapes. The Etang de Bages-Sigean, an ancient gulf open to the sea, offers a surface area of 5500 hectares of calm water connected to the Mediterranean by the grau de Port-la-Nouvelle. Its banks and islands are home to a remarkable biodiversity.

On the Etang de Sigean, opposite the Ile de l'Aute, the Port-Mahon nautical base offers a wide range of activities: discovery of sailing on Optimist, windsurfing and catamaran, but also paddle hire and windsurfing. Canoe trips allow you to discover the lagoons in a sporty and fun way.

Sigean is also famous for its African reserve, a 300-hectare animal park that takes advantage of the preserved natural setting of the Corbières Maritimes. More than 3800 animals live there in semi-liberty in a landscape of garrigues, ponds and forests. The pond is home to more than 1000 birds, including ibises, pink flamingos and pelicans.

Don't hesitate to visit the Aude from our campsite near Sigean, it is ideally placed for a memorable holiday in Occitania!
