Tourism in Caunes Minervois

Carolingian church, medieval streets, Romanesque abbey, Renaissance mansions, wash houses and 17th century facades... The least we can say is that Caunes Minervois cultivates a mixture of genres. 70km separate us from this charming village which crosses the ages in complete tranquillity. It adapts by highlighting its exceptional built heritage in a thousand ways. Today, the buildings of the abbey convent host comic strip exhibitions in partnership with a major Brussels museum. At the same time, this town in the Aude region protects the colonnaded galleries and spiral staircase of the Hôtel Alibert and the medieval frontage of the Hôtel Sicard. But Caunes-Minervois also owes much to its geology. From Roman times until Napoleon III, its white-veined incarnate marble seduced and occupied such emblematic places as the Invalides, the Louvre, the Opéra Garnier and Versailles. Some of the quarries are still in operation and are now exporting to the USA, Japan and the Middle East. Nearby village, the Hermitage du Cros is well known for hiking and climbing. Some of the walls of this geological canyon have been developed. The nearby church of Notre Dame du Cros, its spring and its plane tree-laden surroundings are a delightful stop on the hiker's path.
